Final Reflection - Class 4 Week 7

All good things come to an end. The end of my 4th class is here.

In what ways has this course helped you to develop your own technology skills as a professional teacher?
I cannot begin to explain how much this course has helped me develop my own technology skills. I loved this course because each week the application involved a new type of technology instead of the usual paper. This class took me outside of my comfort zone and forced me to become familiar with an use different kinds of technology that I probably would not have experimented with if it were not for this class. Although I already knew how to use a Blog and use it in my classroom, I am so much more comfortable using Blogs now because of the personal Blog I created for this course. I had absolutely zero knowledge on how to use or create a Wiki or a Podcast. Now, I know how to do both! I really feel like I am becoming a 21st century teacher because I know how to use and implement different types of Web 2.0 resources.

In what ways have you deepened your knowledge of the teaching and learning process?
Although I think it is common sense, this class really emphasized how much teaching has changed in the last years and how it has changed greatly in the past decade. Teachers no longer know everything. In fact, students are coming into the classroom with more knowledge on certain topics than teachers. But, that does not mean teachers are going away. Teachers will always be there to provide a way and an example to students. Although the content/subject specific information I teach my students is important, this class has made me more concerned with the life skills/morals I teach my students. It is important for me to teach my students how to collaborate, how to be competitive, and how to research. The more technology experiences a student is exposed to, the more comfortable and knowledge he or she is. The more comfortable and knowledgeable a student is with technology, the more successful he or she will be.

In what ways have you changed your perspective from being teacher-centered to learner-centered?
Before this class I was a teacher. A teacher through and through. I knew what I did in years past and continued to do it. This class really helped me change my perspective in that I am a teacher but I am also a facilitator. If I want to be a 21st century teacher and if I really do want to prepare my students to be successful then I NEED to be a facilitator. My students know how to use Google, if I give my students a question to answer, they know enough search engines to find the answer. What I need to do is facilitate them, teach them which sites are correct and accurate, teach them how to advance their searches, and teach them how to collaborate with their peers to be successful.

In what ways can you continue to expand your knowledge of learning, teaching, and leading with technology with the aim of increasing student achievement?
I believe no one is ever done learning. My knowledge of teaching and technology will continue to grow, thankfully. However, it will take some work on my part. Luckily, I am only about half way through with my degree at Walden University. I plan on expanding my knowledge through my future classes. I also plan on expanding my knowledge through professional development opportunities within my school district. I will attend any and all opportunities of technology-focused conferences offered through our intermediate school district.

GOALS:
GOAL #1:
Do different things, don’t do things differently

My goal is use my projector in more ways than just a new an improved version of an “overhead projector”. In order to achieve this goal, I hope to use the Apple TVs my school has an sync it with my iPad and use the projector in that way.

GOAL #2:
Provide a variety of final assessments.

My goal is to get away from the original pen and pencil exam. I want to provide a variety of assessments, especially assessments that utilize technology. In order to achieve this goal, I hope to attend a conference or workshop that will assist me in this transition. Another way I plan on achieve this goal is through collaboration with co-workers that already do this.

Checklist Answers:

To be honest, as of right now, I do not know if any of my answers from the week 1 check list would be different. I am a month and a half into the school year and have been following my routine from years past. However, this class has taught more an incredible amount of information that I will implement into my classroom that would cause my answers to change. For example, I now realize the importance of collaboration. I plan on creating and assigning many more group projects. I plan on taking much more of a facilitator role instead of a “teacher” role. Finally, I will work to promote the best practices in technology so that my students have the opportunity to be successful in the future.

I did it... a podcast!

I feel like I just completed a marathon in the world of technology and web 2.0... I did my first podcast! Hip Hip HOORAY!

Here is what I did...

I interview three of my students and asked them a bunch of questions about technology. Then, I downloaded Audacity, a free software that is used for recording audio stuff. Next, I recorded myself and my students' answers. Finally, I signed up for an account with Podcastmachine and uploaded my recording onto there and waaaa-lah.... here it is!

Evaluating 21st Century Skills

Partnership for 21st Century Skills

Reaction to the website: Wow! How have I never heard of this website?! There is an overwhelming abundance of information on this site. Without a ton of investigating, my first reaction is this is the kind of website you have to know what you are looking for before you try to tackle the website. Who are the authors of this site? What is their educational experience? What about their experience with technology?

Information on the site that surprised me or helped me develop a new understanding of issues surrounding the 21st century skills: I absolutely love and agree with the implementation of the essential skills for success in today’s world (critical thinking, problem solving, communication, collaboration). I understand now how essential those skills really are. Students need to know more than what is in their textbooks. Their individual characters need to be stretched and grown as well.
I was surprised to find so many states committed to 21st century standards. I was disappointed not to find my state as one of those states.

Information or opinions on the site that I disagree with along with an explanation why: This is the most difficult question to address because there is so much on the site I agree with. The website stated several content areas that were typically not emphasized in schools. The content areas included global awareness, financial and economic literacy, civic literacy, and health awareness. While the lack of content in those areas may be true for other schools, it is not true at the school I teach at. I would disagree and argue at my school those content areas are emphasized.

Implications for my students and for me as a contemporary educator: This is a website I will bookmark. The links under resources for educators appear to be very user friendly and would assist in my teaching as I try to educate my students on the latest and greatest 21st century skills. This is a website I would consider sharing with the parents of my students, emphasizing how important these skills are.

To Blog or Not To Blog... That is the question.

Grade Level: High School: Grades 9-12
Content Area: Special Education
Last year I started using a "classroom" Blog for the first time. To be honest, I only started one because our principal strongly suggest we do it and I like to follow the rules, most of the time. Last year I used my classroom Blog for a variety of purposes. First, I wanted to stay up to date on the latest technology. I was not entirely comfortable with Blogs and how to use them and I thought creating one would be the best way to learn. Secondly, I wanted my students to be up to date on the latest technology. I strive to make sure my students will be successful for life after high school and being able to successfully use technology is a skill that will make my students successful. The third thing I used my Blog for was a way to teach the proper way to communicate, both in writing/typing and on the Internet. I was able to teach (or remind) my students proper capitalization and punctuation. Text language is not appropriate for Blogging. "It is important to understand Blogging is different that texting" (Laureate Education, Inc., 2011). Finally, I used my Blog as a way to communicate with my students and as a way for my students to communicate with each other. I would post a weekly question. The questions were about anything from what we were studying in math to what their weekend plans were. I gave very few guidelines as to what the responses needed to look like. I wanted the students to be creative! "Creativity will be needed to apply the benefits of new technologies to education" (Laureate Education, Inc., 2011). The only requirements were the students had to respond to my question and appropriately comment on the response of one of their peers.
This year I would like to use my Blog for the same purposes. However, I would also like to do more. I do think Blogging should be used in the classroom and used to its fullest potential! This year I want to use Blogging as a way to learn with a greater community. I am in the brainstorming process of setting something up with the other special education teacher, hoping we will be able to figure out a way for our students to publish and share their writings with each other. The video, Spotlight on Technology, offers insight on why Blogs in the classroom are a great thing. Using Blogs in the classroom allows a teacher to teach his or her students how to respond appropriately to a question. Blogs make students more aware of editing. Finally, Blogs allow students to share their ideas with each other and build off of each other (Laureate Education, Inc., 2011). I hope my classroom Blog is able to impact and teach students many of those great insights.

I Did It!

Although this is not my first Blog, I did learn how to use and create my first Blog ON-LINE. I use Google daily. I use Google multiple times a day. Not only do I use Google multiple times a day but I use massive amounts of technology multiple times a day. Seriously, where would we (or maybe just I) be without technology?!
